History Online Postgraduate Programme.

​The History Online Affordable Post graduate programme.

   The Guyana Institute of Historical Research Online postgraduate programme is available, with the use of internet sources. This programmes is designed for all students, who are desirous of proceeding to the post-graduate level in history.

    All students who register online and are acepted, are eligible to access the course on line. Registered students are requested to pay for tutorials, as well as, the examination. 

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQS)

  1. Does the Institue offer an undergraduate programme in history? No, the Institute has not begun to offer the history programme at undergraduate level.. 

  2. What must I do, if my undergraduate degree is not in history? The Institute offers introductory courses for students who are interested in proceeding to the post graduate programme.

  4. Are there any face to face meetings? Yes. There is a workshop for all students atthe beginning of the academic year.

  5. Is the programme free?  No. Students are required to pay for the course materials and for the examinations.

  6. What other face to face meetings are compulsory for students?  All History online students must attend the  annual Research Conference. 

The Guyana Institute of Historical Research has developed four History programmes:

Program Description

The Guyana Institute of Historical Research offers work leading to the Masters of Arts degree.  The courses provide already university graduates with more tools, than they could ever accomplish in a first degree

  • Hypothetical research

  • Analysis of issues

  • Creative thinking

The program is designed to train students in the methodological and theoretical components of academic history and in broad areas of historical study and analysis.   The programme prepares students for careers in teaching, academia, law, public and government service, publishing, research, as well as other professions.   The program also assists in the professional development of fulltime teachers and other educators, and provides the basis for further graduate study.  Doctoral work often leads to employment in research-related areas, and to University lecturing.

Admission Requirements

Students selecting history as a graduate major should have completed a minimum of 18 semester hours of undergraduate work in history and must have a cumulative undergraduate GPA of at least 2.75 (based on all hours attempted) or a GPA of at least 3.0 for the last two years of undergraduate study.

Course Requirements

1.The Postgraduate Certificate.

2.The Postgraduate Diploma.

3.The taught M.A.

4.The research M.A.

These   programmes have extensive study materials (print and web- based).  You can choose to follow the progression routes outlined below.   The flexibility this offers enables you to plan your studies  around  your work, and home commitments.

The Certificate programme comprises 5 units.   Each unit costs $10,000.00.  Students are required to submit   an essay on one of the historical events.   Once you have passed, you can proceed to the Diploma.

The Post graduate Diploma in Historical studies.    This is a 1 year programme.  It starts from  January and, is completed in June.    A Diploma is awarded after successfully passing the final examination.   Once you have passed the postgraduate Diploma in Historical studies, you may progress to the taught M.A./Research M.A. in historical studies. 

 The taught M.A. in Historical studies is 2-5 years.  7 core courses: 4 electives; 120 hours plenary sessions (2 weeks); research course and dissertation.  If you exit the taught M.A. having passed the 7 core courses, plus 4 electives, you will obtain a Postgraduate Diploma in Historical studies.

The period of the Research M.A. in Historical studies is 2-5 years:

9 core courses; 4 electives; 120 hours plenary sessions (2 weeks); research course and dissertation of 15,000 words.  Those progressing to the M.A.,  must submit their dissertation by the end of September. If you fail to complete the dissertation, you may be awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Historical studies.
